Romantic Candlelit Wedding at Lord Nelson Hotel

Julia and Rob’s wedding day was the day after Hurricane Fiona came through Halifax. Despite a power outage and a lot of downed trees nearby, the wedding was still able to take place safely, and was such a memorable day!

There was a lot of last-minute scrambling to adjust plans, but everything came together beautifully in the end. I know Julia and Rob will never forget their emcees welcoming everyone with headlamps on, their cozy candlelit reception, or dancing to acoustic music with their loved ones.

This wedding was coordinated with effortless ease by KM Wedding & Event Co. and her team. Kathryn executed the day flawlessly, from an in-depth detailed timeline to overcoming any challenges the storm brought!

Wedding at Lord Nelson Hotel

The wedding ceremony took place at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in the afternoon. While the church didn’t have electricity, it was still so beautiful with window light and candles, evoking a wonderful ambience.

Julia and Rob chose to host their wedding reception at the Lord Nelson Hotel because it’s not only a beautiful venue, but would be a convenient option for their guests, many of whom would be traveling to Halifax for the weekend. And the friendly hotel staff made the planning process really easy as the couple planned the wedding from Toronto.

The Lord Nelson Hotel is a great wedding venue for a few reasons – it’s beautiful inside, providing options for indoor portraits if needed if it’s raining or of course, hurricane season. The hotel staff is extremely efficient and helpful, and their food is delicious, too. Plus, the hotel is directly across the street from the Halifax Public Gardens, which is a photo location when the weather is nice!

At the couple’s request, I arranged a big group photo of the couple with all of their guests on the front steps of the church before sending the couple off in a classic vintage car for a drive around town. The special moments that ensued were just so fun and effortless, and resulted in some of my very favorite photos from the day.

Despite the lack of electricity and stormy weather, I was able to capture so many beautiful moments between Julia and Rob and their guests throughout the day. The rain had stopped by the time cocktail hour began, so I took the couple outside for a few photos in a nearby courtyard. It was nice to let them step away from the busy day and enjoy a few moments as newlyweds, getting some great portraits in the process!

A Cozy Candlelit Evening

At cocktail hour, guests were greeted with glasses of Benjamin Bridge bubbly rosé, and the inviting melodies of Bela Strings.

The reception décor consisted of an abundance of candles, elegant greenery and florals, and signage designed by Lupin Design Studio. The primary color of the wedding was a deep wine color, and the stunning florals by Crocus Designs by Laura complimenting the darker tones perfectly with blush, mauve, and hints of lavender along with neutrals and greenery.

A highlight of the reception was the dessert table – it was truly a masterpiece, overflowing with delicious cupcakes and macarons by Lemon & Lavender Bake Shop.

After dinner, it was time to hit the dance floor to the sounds of Big Fish – who despite the power outage put on an outstanding acoustic show! Julia, Rob, and all of their guests embraced the moment and sang their hearts out while dancing the night away.

I had such a lovely time celebrating with Julia and Rob, and I love the photos we got! If you’re planning a wedding in Halifax and are concerned about weather being a factor when it comes to photos, then let me give you some peace of mind: rain or shine, I will confidently capture your wedding day in a natural and beautiful way.
